Good day
well am a marine engineer myself looking at B-school options. just so happens i happen to be Madhus junior from college.
though i have a singular doubt regarding the work ex specially regarding that related to seafarers. I have been to sea since Feb'07. However since ours is a contractual form of employment, does the work ex that counts is only time spent at sea? or a cumulative.

Keeping in mind that though away time at home is technically a vacation period seafarers today have to continuously keep upgrading ourselves through various self-sponsored or company-sponsored programs and seminars. This as well as higher competency examinations.

And hence the doubt. Would appreciate if the moderator shed some light on the issue.

@arch.barc-The average score for the students with science background for nearly all of the top business schools, as commonly listed analyzed by our ranking services, is in the upper 600s or low 700s.
Most business schools prefer a GMAT score of less than 2 years old.

In view of the lesser number of years of work experience that you currently have as compared to the ISB Applicant pool, it is recommended to re-take and improve your GMAT Score and apply.

The last date for submission of application forms is 1 December an not 15 December. Also, ISB will not contact you, you have to fill up the application form and submit it before the last date. In case you are short listed for an interview, you will be intimated by email. Please read the admission process carefully at http://www.isb.edu/pgp/FrequentlyAskedQuestions.Shtml?menuid=109

Hello sir,

I work with a major Pharmaceutical company as a programmer. Though, I'm an engineer by qualification, much of my work is to do with clinical trials, which is the hard core Pharmaceutical sector. I can say, I have more exposure to Pharma sector than IT sector. I want to know, if I would be considered an IT guy, or a pharma guy? In other words, Do you consider the background of my work or background of my education?

BTW, I have a score of 700 in GMAT, with a good academics. I will be 3 years experienced by the time I plan to join ISB.

Iamcartic,

Prima facie I would say your profile would be suitable for admission to the ISB. I would like to add of course that the admissions to ISB are very competitive and your actual admissions will depend on the quality of your application which include essays, your past academic record, your GMAT score, the recommendation you get from the reviewers whom we will contact and your performance in the interview ( assuming you are called for the admission interview). We really look at the overall quality of the experience and not how fragmented or other wise it is.

We are not asking you to do anything special for ISB but something that you might have already done at work. Anything for which you have the ownership from conceptualisation to execution stage like starting a new vertical, etc.

Also, please note that there is no particular kind of work that will guarantee you an admission into ISB. We only want to know your level of understanding and learning in your current area of work. You will only be compared to applicants with similar work profile and not the entire lot of applicants.

Dear sir,

In my application I inadvertently made an while entering my GMAT scores - I interchanged the verbal and Quantitative Scaled scores and Percentiles. My Total Score and Percentile has been entered correctly.

I have sent a mail regarding this to the PGP Admissions but have not received a reply. I am extremely apologetic for this goof up. Can you tell me whether this will be held against me? What can I do further in this regard.

Thanks for boosting my confidence. I plan to apply the next year. I had one more query.
Can we get The Letter of Recommendation from a person who is not our manager but whom we are reporting to in our office. What I mean is that in our company a person at G40 level and above is a manager. But he delegates his work to employees at G30 level.I currently report to a G30 and he decides my rating.Since I closely work with him so he knows my contribution better. So whom should I ask a letter of recommendation from?

Also please tell me what I should do in this year to make my application stronger.
Thanks in anticipation.

Your qualifications are perfectly fine. In the past, we have seen that the second cycle is more competitive as compared to the first one. Also, a lot depends upon the quality of applications we recieve in that particular cycle. If you have a strong application then it does not matter which cycle you apply in.

Rishi,

Prima facie I would say your profile would be suitable for admission to the ISB.

The average GMAT score for the current batch is 720 and the median 80 percent range is 660 - 760. In your case, a score above 650 might help you in getting short listed. However, I would like to add that the admissions to ISB are very competitive and your actual admissions will depend on the quality of your application which include essays, your past academic record, your GMAT score, the recommendation you get from the reviewers whom we will contact and your performance in the interview ( assuming you are called for the admission interview).

good morning,
im working in merchant navy as an officer for last 5 years. im holding chief officer's rank at the moment. i will be comoleting my Master's rank exam next year. i belive Bombay university now recognises the Master's competency certificate equivalent to graduation degree. This hasnt been there earlier which denied further studies for our proffesion's master mariners. Lying the darkness of ignorance, and going by mere the academic qualification, all colleges have been denying the merchant navy officers from gaining any futher knowledge through formal education.i would like to study in our esteemed college. i hope atleast the ISB , which includes a variety of proffessions, gives us too an optortunity too....

Since you have high work exp, GMAT is the only current indicator of your academic potential. Thus, a better score will definitely add strength to your application. Secondly, competition is not in our hands. You might loose out because of your GMAT score in the highly competitive applicant pool.

Maverick,

The average work exp of the current batch is 5 years and the batch age ranges from 23-51 years. Prima facie, you fit into the ISB profile. You only need to take the GMAT test which requires a lot preparation. I will suggest that you visit the site http://www.gmac.com and learn more about the test. There are various coaching centers like Kaplan, Princeton Review, Jamboree, Career Launcher, etc, that assist in GMAT preparation.

I would also like to highlight that the programme at ISB is very rigorous in content and structure. Students who join the ISB must possess an academic record that can convince the Admissions Committee of their ability to cope with the rigorous curriculum. Our evaluation therefore considers your undergraduate performance. However there is no cut-off score.

In case, you had an average academic record in the past, you can always make it up with a good GMAT score and a strong application. The ADCOM will also look at the depth and breadth of your work exp. While writing the application essays, make sure that you highlight your professional capabilities and leadership skills.

For Admissions deadline, please visit the link http://www.isb.edu/pgp/For_Indian_PassportHolders.Shtml

Thanks for the reply,
I'll refrain from mentioning the GMAT goofup. Could you also please clarify that although the score of 660 is below the last year's average, it by no means rejects your complete application, and you go through the complete application in a holistic way. As its not possible for me to retake the GMAT, and shall be applying with this score at round 1 only.

Thanks again,

Sarathidey,

I will not advise you to mention the GMAT goof up in your application.

Prima facie I would say your profile would be suitable for admission to the ISB. Even though we have a holistic approach towards each application, the actual admission also depends on the applicant pool.

Please note that the average GMAT score in the IT applicant pool is 730. A good score strengthens your application but does not guarantee admission while a low score does not necessarily mean exclusion. The overall application would need to convince the Admissions Committee of the your suitability.

1) No. Both candidates will be treated at par. The score is important and not the year in which the test was taken.

2) You can take the test anytime you feel completely prepared.

Prima facie I would say your profile would be suitable for admission to the ISB. I would like to add that the admissions to ISB are very competitive and your actual admissions will depend on the quality of your application which include essays, your past academic record, your GMAT score, the recommendation you get from the reviewers whom we will contact and your performance in the interview ( assuming you are called for the admission interview).

I will advise that you concentrate on strenghtening your application.

1) You will not be able to list the PH.D under educational qualifications since you are still pursuing it. I will suggest that you explain about your PH.D in the optional essay.

2) In the current batch, we have around 5 percent of the students from the Telecom sector.

3) There is no perfect GMAT score - a good score strengthens your application but does not guarantee admission while a low score dos not necessarily mean exclusion. The overall application would need to convince the Admissions Committee of the your suitability. You may note that the average GMAT score this year has been 720.
