Allegation GMAT Question of the Day

A particular shade of green is formed by mixing 30% of yellow paint to 70 % blue paint by volume. How many gallons of yellow paint should be added to 70 gallons of this green paint to reduce the percentage of blue paint by 10 %.

b) 23/3
c) 10
d) 32/3
e) 35/3

    Yellow paint=30% of 70 = 21 gallon
    Blue paint = 70% of 70 = 49 gallon

    suppose y gallon of yellow paint needs to be added to make the blue paint decrease by 10%.

    so, 49 = 60%(70+y)
    y = 35/3. Thats the ans.

    but the original solution is 70 gallons so the new solution is 35/3……
    Another approach is what @Ani has suggested.
