GMAT Question of the Day : Critical Reasoning

Which of the following best completes the passage below? In opposing government regulation of business, conservatives often appeal to the Jeffersonian ideal of limited government, expressing the wish that government would ?get off the backs of the American people.? Yet, paradoxically, many of these same conservatives address questions of private morality, such as those dealing with sexual behavior, by calling for______

(A) a return to the restrictive sexual morality of the Victorian era
(B) a strengthening of the role of the family in setting moral norms for society
(C) a limitation on the amount of sexually provocative material appearing in books, motives, and television shows
(D) greater freedom for individuals to choose their own way of handling sexual issues
(E) an increased governmental role in the regulation and control of private sexual behavior

How does the D explain the paradox ?
getting off the back is equivalent to giving more freedom, the paradox will be present only if conservatives look for more freedom in one area area and restriction in other…

D is NOT the correct answer as it does not present a paradox to the statement presented before it.
A paradox will only present itself if conservatives look for more government control in one area (in this case, private sexual behavior) and less control in another (in this case, business regulations)

E is the right answer!

We expect the take GMAT team to guide in such matters, if the team itself doesnt verify the answers before publishing all the GMATers will loose faith. This is very demoralizing.

E is the correct one. Although C is a good trap too, but it will be bit out of context to relate censorship on the media with government control.

No one seems to have considered the Choice A.

The paradox could also be explained by a support to the pre-independence, Victorian restrictive morality, as opposed to Jeffersonian ideals.

E….

Reasoning:

Paradoxically is the key here…. In the first part, indicates that conservatives dont want the govt to involve. So, ideally in the second case, the conservatives want them to have a strict regulation.

A - word “restricted” induces less control
B - role of the family is irrelevant
C - limitation on the sources provided doesn’t necessarily mean that the govt has strict regulation
D - word ‘freedom’ induces less control (as in A)
E - Correct ans

E would be the answer… because, he uses paradoxically.. firstly he says gvt should get off the backs of american people… so he wants the govt to involve in the second issue..
