k, n, 12, 6, 17

What is the value of n in the list above?
(1) k < n
(2) The median of the numbers in the list is 10.

A) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

I think the answer should be E.

Since median(avg of 5 numbers) = 10

(k+n+12+6+7) / 5 = 10
(k+n+12+6+7)=50
hence, N+k=25

Now stmt 1 says n>k, this doesnt give values of n & k

Also only stmt 2 doesnt give value of n, it only says that the median is 10, i.e. Average of 5 numbers is 10

considering both statements also we cannot assume any value for n & k hence cannot determine value of n.

I think answer is “C”… C) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
becoz by statement 1 alone we can find out the relation between k & n but not the exact value of n….
Similarly with the statement 2…
but when we combine both the statements it gives value of n as 10

Where can I find correct answer of the questions asked by Admin???????

The list is - 6, k, n, 12, 17
Now K and n can be placed anywhere in the list. If we go with stmt-1, k < n so this is confirmed that k will precede n in the list.
Again as median is 10, so it is confirmed that either k or n has to be 10. But if k = 10, then there is no place to put n in the list becasue the list is coming like - 6, …, 10, …, 12, …, 17, …
Combining both options, it is sure that n has to be 10. So answer is C.

Both statements are required to answer the ques.

2. gives the value of median, and thus the set of numbers should be arranged in ascending or descending order; third term will be median
1. Since k<n, therefore, n=10

we can write

6,k,n,12,17

in these five terms n will be median because k<n

also it is given that median is 10 so n=10

hence correct answer is C

condition 1 tells us nothing about n, so A and D are out.

condition 2 is more helpful, but not on its own, since either k or n could be the median. Condition 1 forces us to set n = 1 so this leaves us with 2 possible lists:

k 6 10 12 17
or
6 k 10 12 17

either of which gives us n = 10.
Thus both together are sufficient, only.
