Tom, Jane, and Sue each purchased a new house. The average (arithmetic mean) price of the three houses was $120,000. What was the median price of the three houses?
(1) The price of Tom’s house was $110,000.
(2) The price of Jane’s house was $120,000.
A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

C. Both statements are required.
C.
$110,000
$120,000
$130,000
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient
I stand corrected to B.Alone is sufficient. If the mean is 120k and jane’s house is 120k the average of other two houses is 120k which means that
a) one house costs more than 120k and other less than 120k
or
b) both houses are 120k.
but both houses can’t be more than 120K.
In both scenarios median is 120K. Hence, B alone is sufficient.
Thanks Krishna.. u r right !! I correct myself to B
Yes, its B
correct answer B
B
B
B
B
I think that the answer is E
I wud go with option C.What “Krishna Mohan” is talking abt is mean.Median is the central value when all the items are arranged in ascending order.So we need both the values to get the median.
B
B
C
B
dudes the answer is D
BECAUSE THE MEDIAN IS ASKED IN THE ANSWER AND MEDIAN IS SUM OF TWO PPL WHICH IS GAINED BY EACH OF THEM ..
ANSWER IS D .. CHECK IT PPL
Krishna logic sounds very good. Thanks
C
B.
if one of the values is 120, then, since the average is also 120, the other values will be 120+x and 120-x… median being the middle value will be 120…
B
Thanks krishna. You really went a step ahead. Ans is B
B
T+J+S=360,000
T=110,000
J=120,000
S=130,000
Median=120,000
Cobining 1 & 2 we can find the median -Answer C
‘D’ – both can work independly
As it may be 110k + 120K + 130 k = 120k AVG
Else 120k + 120k + 120 k = 120 k AVG
So both can work..
Answer is surely B.
you guys can pick whatever values you want for the two remaining house prices(considering they both amount to 240), and you will see that one will have to be greater than 120 and the othher will have to be smaller than 120, making 120 the median. OR the other two houses could cost 120 as well which would maintain 120 as the media.
ANSWER B!!!

——————————————————————–
Median is nothing but mid number, Lets assume cost is 60, 110 & 190. In that case median will be 110.
So from statement 1, we can not find the answer.
That is why correct answer will be B.
B sure, you can answer with the two choices but the choice 1 is not necesary to solve it.
answer is B
