GMAT Question of the Day: Problem Solving

Company X has n regional offices, where n represents an even integer. Each regional office must recommend two candidates, one male and one female, to serve on the corporate auditing committee. If each of the offices must be represented by exactly one member on the auditing committee and if the committee must consist of an equal number of male and female employees, how many different committees can be formed?

(A) Square of (.5n)
(B) n!/(Square of ((.5n)!))
(C) Square of (n!/((0.5n)!(.5n)!)))
(D) n!/((0.5n)!)
(E) n!

the answer is b.
The solution is here suppose there are 4 companies a,b,c,d.
now the equation according to problem above would be like this

Company : Men Women
if a-1 men then i have to choose 1 men from b.c.d suppose b 1 men then we have 1 women from c and d respectively.

now can can have like this 6 iterations like this
a-1M b-1M c-1W d-1W
a-1M c-1M b-1W d-1W
a-1M d-1M b-1W c-1W
b-1M c-1M a-1W d-1W
b-1M d-1M a-1W c-1W
c-1M d-1M a-1W b-1W

it means simply ab ,ac ,ad , bc, bd, cd.for men and women all iteration .

So for N=4 we have sol=6 substitute n=4 in the answer choices and b gives us 6 as sol not any other choice .

If you want you can try for even n=6 and b will again get satisfied .

I think the answer is A.
Soln:
In n/2 offices, any 1 member can get selected so the number of ways would be n/2* 2C1 i.e n/2*2 = n
In the remaining n/2 offices, there is only 1 choice (1 way in which either men or women can be selected) to balance out the number of men and women to be selected i.e n/2
thus the no. of ways is n*n/2 i.e n^2/2 i.e option A.

Answer is c

So there will be 2n members, n male and n female members.

we have to select only 1 from each office so its

nC0.5 * nC0.5

n!/0.5!(n-0.5!) * n!/0.5!(n-0.5!)

n! square/0.5n!square*(n-0.5n!)square

square of (n!/0.5n!*n-0.5n!)

square of (n!/0.5n!square - 0.25n!square)

square of ( n! / 0.5n!square )

square of (n! / 0.5n! * 0.5n!) answer

1) n represents a even integer thus there will be n/2 males and n/2 females.
2) each company should have exactly one representative.

cause if you select a female the possibility of selecting the male from that company is o and if you deseclect a female from the company the probablity of selecting the male is 1.

therefore the number of ways n/2 women can be selected to form the representatives in the group of n people will be same as the number of ways the committee can be formed.

n C n/2 = n ! { (n/2) ! * ((n) - (n/2) )!}

=>n! / .5n! * .5n!
=> n! / .5 n! * .5n!
Answer c.

Hope this helps.

My take is that its D.

Shilpa, there is something fundamentally wrong with this expression: nC0.5 * nC0.5. You cannot choose non-integer from a sample set of n.

So here is the breakdown of the rules:
1. A total of n males and n females are recommended from all offices
2. No committee members can be from the same regional office as each other
3. There are only n/2 female slots and n/2 male slots

Lets say u select the female members first, starting with n females for n/2 open slots.
there will be: n*(n-1)*(n-2)…(n/2 + 1) different possible combinations
That expression can be simplified into: n!/(n/2)!

Now for the guys, the same rules apply except u do not start with n males. You start with n/2 males and hence all the males are selected automatically since no 2 members can be from the same office. No new combination will result from this automatic selection so the result is n!/(n/2)!
