D..since “that” refers to his powers of observation, so verb has to be “make”..

My answer D. Powers of observation is plural, so the verb should also be “make”.

It can be D and E. but D is better than E.

Explanation
—————

1. Must be make and not makes because make relates to powers (Plural)
2. So we have now D and E.
3. D is better because of the omitted (relative+be) - it is preferable to mitt relative+be, I mean omitting which+is (which relates to the group)

D

Powers is plural so it must be make.

E has ‘which’ - it seems to change the meaning and looks irrelevant. I can’t given an exact answer to the second part though.

Will go with E - ‘Make..a group’ sounds better than ‘Make..as a group’

In my opinion the question is simply wrong. The sentence is seriously flawed with parallelism and none of the answer choices tries to correct.

C

“that” is used for singular only na…hence, MAKES him.

This singular is his possession of the powers.

The correct answer seems to be “D”,though im confused between “E”n “D”.
II suggest the correct answer should also be given along with it.

C for me.

If the reasoning you give for selecting D, then the original sentence should read like this…

Byron possessed powers of observation “which” would have made him a great anthropologist and which……
should be ‘which’ instead of ‘that’.

In my opinion, “that” here referes to Byron’s possession of powers. Which is singluar.

A, B, C -> Eliminate them because of “makes”, which is a wrong verb tense.
E -> Eliminate because there should be “,” in front of “which”.

Byron possessed powers of observation that make his letters as a group the rival of the best novels of the time.

Bryon possessed powers of observation that make
“plural” therefore need to use make?

A.
I feel there is nothing wrong with the original sentence. (apart from the fact thats it not the greatest of the sentences).

The “powers of observation” is given as a singular fact.. something which could have resulted in something else.. the sentence on establishing the fact tries to communicate, using the same fact that his letters as a group would rival the best novels.
