    Tricky one..
    My answer: D

First glance, looking at verb tense I would’ve said C . But I could not figure out what is so “peculiar” about the sentence..
    Looking for pecularity –
“adhere to one another, beating in unison”
“adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another”
So I went for the conjunction yet. If D is the answer, I would add a comma to make it grammatically correct, here -
    D) beating in unison, yet adopting

  2. guest says:

    Answer: B

    A is the same.
C & D are grammatically incorrect (missing reference to object or whatever the formal term for that is)
    E is logically incorrect.

  3. thetrystero says:

    Answer: B

    A is same.

C & D are grammatically wrong (missing reference to object)
E does not make logical sense.

  4. Ajay says:

    Cool
I too think D is the asnwer

  5. Avinash says:

    Ans D,

I would have voted for A unless,

beating in unison and have a specialized orientations exclusive of one another ,

both are contrary statements. So Yet is the keyword which adds sense to the topic.

  6. Anand says:

    i will go with D

  7. anu g says:

    D looks like correct.
they beat in unison ‘BUT’ adopt in way which is not unified.

  8. rishabh says:

but dont u guys thnk that parallelism shud be dere which is only satisfied by option c

  9. Francis says:

    I agree with D.

It’s SC along with a bit of reasoning?

  10. Syed says:

    d seems correct.

  11. Viv says:

    Well, M still confused…

If we go by the parallelism rule it should definately be C.

“adhere to one another, beat in unison and adopt specialized orientations “.

But, If I go by the meaning, then it produces the Altered Intent error in the statement as “adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another” is not indicating unification or similarity so it should be used with “But”.

I would stick to C though.

  12. anu g says:

Viv: Dont put the incomplete sentence.. it will confuse you more .
” adhere to one another, beat in unison and adopt specialized orientations exclusive of one another “.

you can see above the sentence is contradicting itself.

‘But’ could be used to project an exception, ‘yet’ or ‘still’ can be used to show a difference in behavior but with a lighter tone.

  13. akshat says:

    Viv,
it cant be C for sure. the para talks about 1 peculiar feature.. the option “adhere to one another, beat in unison and adopt specialized orientations ” doesnt really takes the intended momentum of the sentence to its goal..

the answer has to be soemthing that stands out such as contradiction in this cases..- peculiarity here is not due to their similaratiry BUT their difference..

    hope ur doubts solved dude..

AND yah the answer is D….

  14. Arun says:

    I would go for c.

but how do we get to know the correct ans

  15. Gaurav Karwal says:

Guys..the answer is C..there is too less to doubt about it..

  16. kapil says:

C is the answer, clear case of parallasim

  17. Sachin says:

C is the answer, parallelism and Subject-Verb Agreement.

  18. daniella sankar says:

    C is the asnwer.

  19. A Chakraverty says:

    Ans. D

“A peculiar feature of the embryonic mammalian circulatory system is that in the area of the heart the cells adhere to one another, beating in unison yet adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another.”

Option A cannot be the answer because “beating in unison” and “adopting specialized orientation exclusive of one another” are opposite in nature, thus can’t be connected with “and”. Therefore “yet” is appropriate.

Similarly B is wrong. “while” is inappropriate here

Option C is wrong. Being together, beating in unison and adopting specialized orientation are not parallel processes. In fact, being together is the status of cells

    Option E. It is absurd.

  20. earth says:

    C… parallelism!

  21. M J says:

    My choice is E.

‘,’ can’t refer to another feature since there is only one feature.
    So A, C and D are gone.
B does not make logical sense to me.

    So ‘E’.

What is the correct ans, admin?

  22. Sapan says:

    My take is D.
GMAT TAKE..can you provide the right answer?

  23. Roshan Gupta says:

    Hi..
    Answer is D.

Though at the first glace C look s correct. Grammatically and as per parallel structure it’s correct too but its meaning as compare to D one is less acceptable. D is also correct grammatically and have correct structure.

A peculiar feature of the embryonic mammalian circulatory system is that in the area of the heart the cells adhere to one another, beating in unison and adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another.

    (A) beating in unison and adopting

    (B) they beat in unison while adopting

    (C) beat in unison, and adopt

    (D) beating in unison yet adopting?

    (E) even though they beat in unison and adopt

the rule for parellelism demands that the corresponding actions be similar in tense.here there are two actions that the cells are doing, beating and adopting.they are not doing the action of adhering.the word adhere is the state in which the cells are, meaning the place where the cells stick to one another.it becomes clear if you “translate” the statement into a simple statement. here its about a particular place in the circulatory system.in this case the heart, the cells stick to one another and there is a certain peculiarity, and what is that peculiarity? that they beat together (nothing peculiar about it).what is peculiar is the latter part of the sentence.sentence correction is not just correct grammar but also logical corelation between the various parts ,which means if i use the word peculiar i will have to somewhere show the peculiarity.the word yet in option D does that. just to be parellel you dont say adhereing.they are not doing the action of sticking together.they are stuck to each other (adhere), thats a state they are in .the actions are exclusive of adhere not inclusive. its like saying “in the area of the heart the cells are stuck to each other, beating together yet doing something else exclusive of each other”. you woulldnt say sticking to each other.beating together and doing something elase.sticking is not a process whereas the other two are.

i could be on a fantastic journey of rationalising an answer or i could be right.but if you ask me about the answer that sucks the least i would go with D.

    what say folks?
